Welcome to Smith County’s Trustee’s efficient, and convenient way to pay taxes…. Online!
The Smith County Trustee’s Office continually strives to find and offer new services to benefit our taxpayers. We believe this service will prove to be extremely beneficial locally as well as statewide. The current year taxes are due and payable beginning October 1st through the last day of February of the following year. Our office is open Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm for your convenience. During the month of February our office is open on Saturdays from 8:00 am until 12:00 pm.
The Trustee serves three primary functions
- Collecting all county property taxes (all property, real and personal, tangible and intangible, must be assessed for taxation by the state or its political subdivisions unless property is declared to be exempt by some provision of Tennessee law)
- Keeping a fair regular account of all money received
- Investing temporarily idle county funds. The trustee disburses sales tax revenues and may collects property taxes and other state and local taxes. The trustee generally acts as treasurer for the county, receiving and paying out funds. The trustee must keep a detailed account of these transactions
Smith County does offer a tax relief program, and a tax freeze program for qualified tax payers. The basic guidelines for the tax relief are, you must be 65 or older or permanently disabled. There is is also and income limit for this programs. The State of Tennessee also has a tax relief program for the 100% (war related) disabled veteran.
